Bringing Their Eyes and Our Environment Together

At Belle Vue Specialty Eye Care, our optometrists specialize in children’s functional vision, including visual stress and behavior in relation to learning and school difficulties.

Our goal is to create a warm, inviting environment where our young patients can be assessed and tested for eye-related behavioral conditions, management strategies can be formulated, and treatment plans are successfully implemented.

What is Functional Optometry?

Functional, or behavioral optometry is a specialized, extended optometry practice that studies vision in relation to visual demands and functional everyday tasks. It measures how easily children can perform daily functions, how visually comfortable they are with them, and the amount of stress they place on the eyes.

Who Can Benefit From Functional Optometry?

Almost everyone with vision problems can benefit from functional optometry. However, at Belle Vue Specialty Eye Care, our focus is pediatric functional optometry for children who:

  • Have reading difficulties or read at a slower rate than their peers
  • Have difficulties with eye-hand coordination
  • Are unwilling to read or study
  • Have difficulty with visually demanding sports
  • Spend long periods of time in front of screens
  • Experience visual fatigue and burning, irritated eyes
  • Have been diagnosed with strabismus (crossed-eyes) or amblyopia (lazy eye)

Management Strategies and Treatment Plans

Once our behavioral optometrists have conducted all relevant testing, we will offer a customized and personal treatment plan that may include the following:

  • Vision therapy
  • Further behavioral exams directed toward visually demanding/stressful tasks
  • Advice on how to prevent visual stressers. This may include behavioral realignment to visually demanding tasks
  • Prescription glasses specific to the child’s needs
  • Lenses that specifically target the reduction and treatment of headaches, migraines, and concussions
  • Syntonics (phototherapy), a type of therapy that utilizes light to enhance vision

Treating visual and behavioral problems, especially at an early age, can often guarantee improvement in learning capabilities, enhancement of daily tasks, and future success with adult activities. Contact us now to book an appointment with our functional optometry team.
