See the World in Living Color

Every child deserves to see the world’s vibrant colors. While color vision deficiencies, often known as color-blindness, may lead some parents to think that their children will miss out on experiencing the full spectrum of colors, innovative advancements in lens technology are changing the game.

Our team is here to guide families through the benefits of EnChroma lenses and assess if they are the right choice for your little ones. The first step, though, is visiting us for a comprehensive eye exam.

How Does Color Vision Deficiency Affect Children?

The human eye contains specialized cells that convert light into signals sent to the brain. Rods detect light and dark, and cones detect colors.

There are 3 types of cone cells: red-sensing, green-sensing, and blue-sensing. Color vision deficiency occurs when these cells cannot detect color accurately, leading to difficulties distinguishing between certain hues.

Distinguishing colors is an essential part of learning and development during childhood. Children with color vision deficiency see colors differently than their peers, which can affect their activities at school.

Who Can Experience Color Vision Deficiency?

Color vision deficiencies are actually quite common. Although these vision issues appear more often in males, both genders can be affected. Sometimes, children with color vision deficiency aren’t aware of their condition, meaning they may see the world differently without realizing it!

The most common type of color vision deficiency is red-green color-blindness, which has 4 variations: deuteranomaly, protanomaly, protanopia, and deuteranopia.

In deuteranomaly, children have trouble telling reds and greens apart. Their world may appear less vibrant, with a dominance of blues and yellows.

Protanomaly impacts how your child perceives red shades. Red may appear gray, and colors that contain red may look dull. Protanomaly can impact how colorful objects, traffic lights, and skin tones look.

Protanopia causes children to completely lack red cone cells in their eyes, making them unable to see red. This deficiency impacts their ability to discern red, green, and orange hues, affecting tasks like reading maps or identifying fruits based on color.

Deuteranopia is the complete lack of green cone cells. Children with this condition may only see in shades of blue and gold and can confuse greens with reds and yellows.

How EnChroma Lenses Can Help

Specially designed to address red-green color vision deficiency, EnChroma lenses are an innovative technology that filters specific wavelengths of light to minimize the overlap in color sensitivity and enhance color distinction.

Around 80% of those with red-green color-blindness have reported improvement in their color vision after wearing EnChroma lenses!

Does your child have trouble with their color vision? Have them take the online EnChroma Color Vision test. It’s one step to understanding your child’s color perception and can guide future eye care decisions.
