Keep Your Child’s Vision Going the Distance

Myopia, or nearsightedness, is on the rise. Nearly 40% of the US population already has some degree of myopia, but studies show that almost half of the entire world will have myopia symptoms by 2050. If this is the case, how can you help ensure your child maintains clear vision?

Our mission at Belle Vue Specialty Eye Care is to ensure your child has everything they need to see clearly as they grow older. Many eye conditions could develop as your child grows up, but myopia is by far one of the most common and a huge focus for our team.

We want to ensure your child has everything they need to manage their myopia. Please, book their appointment today!

What Causes Myopia?

Myopia can develop in children as young as 5 years old and can progress as they get older. The blurry vision your child experiences is generally caused by their eyes growing too long or their cornea becoming too steep. This prevents light from reaching their retina, affecting their distance vision.

Children can develop myopia for a variety of reasons, including:

Children are more likely to develop myopia if their parents already have it.

Spending too much time looking at things up close can contribute to myopia.

Playing outside can help manage the risk of developing myopia.

Does Your Child Have Myopia?

It can be hard to know if your child is developing myopia. In some cases, they may be too young to identify problems with their vision. However, there are signs you can look for if your child has myopia, including:

  • Constant rubbing of the eyes
  • Frequent squinting
  • Excessive blinking
  • Headaches
  • Covering one eye to focus
  • Turning or tilting the head to one side to see more clearly
  • Slow reading and writing abilities
  • Avoiding reading altogether
  • Having a short attention span
  • Holding their books close to the face

CooperVision offers a Nearsightedness Assessment Tool to help determine if your child is at risk of developing myopia. Take the quiz at the link below!

Treatments

MiSight 1 Day contact lenses are comfortable, soft multifocal contacts designed with multiple rings of peripheral defocus that help peripheral light focus just in front of the retina. This signals the eye to slow down how quickly it elongates.

Vision therapy can help your child control the muscles that help their eyes focus. Through a tailored vision therapy program, we’ll help your child complete a range of different eye exercises that could help improve their eye’s focus and manage myopia progression.
