Understanding Color Vision Deficiency in Children

Color vision depends on special cells in the eye called cones, which detect red, green, and blue light. When these cells do not function properly, children experience difficulty telling some colors apart.

Color vision deficiency can affect learning and everyday activities. Children may not even realize their world looks different, which can lead to challenges at school or in play.

Who Can Experience Color Vision Deficiency?

Color vision deficiencies are actually quite common. Although these vision issues appear more often in males, both genders can be affected. Sometimes, children with color vision deficiency aren’t aware of their condition and may not know something is wrong!

The most common type of color vision deficiency is red-green color blindness, which has 4 variations:

  • Deuteranomaly: Trouble distinguishing reds and greens, with a world dominated by blues and yellows.
  • Protanomaly: Red shades appear dull or gray, affecting perception of objects and skin tones.
  • Protanopia: Complete lack of red cone cells, making red, green, and orange difficult to see.
  • Deuteranopia: Complete lack of green cone cells, causing confusion between reds, greens, and yellows.

How EnChroma Lenses Can Help

EnChroma lenses are specially designed to address red-green color vision deficiency by filtering specific light wavelengths. This reduces overlap in color signals, helping the brain distinguish colors more clearly.

Around 80% of those with red-green color blindness report improved color perception after wearing EnChroma lenses.

If you suspect your child has difficulty with color vision, they can take the EnChroma Color Vision Test online. This easy step can provide valuable insight and help guide their eye care.
